Previously we wrote that the USOC is a "House of Cards". The day after the “Honorable” Mary Bono resigns, as we predicted, Steve Penny former CEO and President of USA Gymnastics, is arrested for evidence tampering in the criminal investigation of USA Gymnastics/USOC/sexual abuser Larry Nassar.
Like many other USOC NGB minions, Penny’s playbook was “Too Big To Fail." He was “thick as thieves” with former USOC CEO Scott Blackmun and USOC leadership, a group still doubling down on their their insider Kool Aid by naming a negligent insider board member as President last month. CNN writes that “Penny was detained after US Marshals tracked him to a cabin in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He is being held at the Sevier County Jail while awaiting extradition to Walker County, Texas. If convicted of the third-degree felony charge, Penny could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.” This is what happens when people in power plead the Fifth Amendment. It should send chills down the spine of remaining in the USOC, NGB Boards and executive leadership. The dominoes are falling!
The examples of USOC insider Kool Aid are rampant:
The appointment of Susanne Lyons, as USOC President. Lyons, a Board Member since 2009, in 2018 served as interim CEO of the USOC, when she was advised on the record by Senator Dick Blumenthal to bring personal counsel to the next Senate Hearing, and urged to “resign immediately” by Rep. Buddy Carter. Lyons was appointed without input from the USOC Athletes Advisory Council or Congress.
The insider USOC Board hiring sports marketing agent Sarah Hirshland as CEO of USOC, was more of the same insider maneuvering. Of course again without input from the USOC Athletes Advisory Council or Congress.
Sports agent Casey Wasserman, Chairman of LA2028, doubling down on the insider playbook of former LA1984 and USOC Chairman Peter Ueberroth, by grabbing control of the USOC TWO BILLION of media and marketing rights from 2019-2028 (the real property of TEAM USA athletes) for LA media and political insider gain.
The five-day Mary Bono “boo-boo” is yet another example of USOC and their NGBs’ sloppy background checks and hiring of leaders who will play the insider game vs. thinking and acting as real leaders of industry, in this case to truly reform our bankrupt Olympic Sport system.
Gymnasts Aly Raisman and Simone Biles toppled Mary Bono by speaking out and telling the truth. Is it too much to ask that the USOC demands that the board of USA Gymnastics start doing the same?
The seriousness of Penny’s arrest, and no doubt, the mix of both pain and a feeling of “justice served” amongst the Larry Nassar survivors, should FINALLY be taken most seriously by USOC CEO Hirshland, Chair Lyons and their Board and executive team. Yet sadly we are not hopeful, as the ethos that guides the current USOC, even under Hirshland’s helm, is one of protecting the team and the insider game at all costs, even if it means throwing the sexual abuse victims to the curb. CNN writes: “the indictment claims Penny ordered the removal of documents from the Karolyi Ranch in Walker County, Texas with "the purpose of impairing the ongoing investigation by destroying or hiding the documents," after he learned an investigation was underway.”
The USOC is a corrupt House of Cards about to be blown over.
